BLURCK Open House and Workshops

Amongst all beginnings that one can imagine, it is always a special feat to begin being physically present in a space: to have an address to call your own, a place for people to visit, and a pin on google maps. In Delhi, we celebrated this milestone last weekend as we opened our second office, this time in the country’s capital.

All of us assembled in Delhi to share our work with the city, offering a glimpse of how we think and work, through workshops.

The day started with Khoosh touring a bunch of people in the lanes of Kalu Sarai as they spotted some unique as well as typical typographic elements. Most information in the city is delivered through letters pasted over the city on billboards and signages. Yet it takes a creative eye to see them for their font, thickness, readability, and the impact they have on how we perceive the city’s information.

Meanwhile, Chintan, with his immaculate model making skills and a passion for carpentry, put together a bunch of participants to create miniatures of some famous and some not so famous chairs. Everyone had their instruments dug into cardboards and paper as they interpreted their respective chairs and broke them down to pieces that could be put together later.

Lakshita combined her expertise in printmaking and an eye for finding value in the most unassuming waste to curate a block-printing workshop. Participants carved and assembled waste PVC wires and blobs to make blocks that were later used for making fine prints. The office was decorated with some beautiful motifs created in the space, each an imprint of something personal to each participant.

In the afternoon, Rahul got some participants reading given plans, without revealing the buildings. Some of them sketched spaces and sections, while the others chose to write what they understood. The variety of interpretations revealed how every drawing has information that is definite and information that is assumed.

With Bhavya, the participants travelled down the memory lane and mapped 5 objects in a place/space of their choice. Many preconceived notions about a map were debunked as participants carefully curated the logic of giving more space to one object vs another. Each map was a personal memoir of their relation to the chosen places.

The workshops were followed by an open house with an exhibition of our works, and a reflection on our practice over the years. In putting this together, we were reminded that BLURCK is an outcome of our shared ambition for our craft, and an immense respect for the plurality of how we think. This is only a beginning towards creating a thoughtful and collaborative design community, one city at a time. Knock, our doors are open, both digitally and physically.
